"The Saddle Rack" Lines from The Leathertooler Slim McNaught

Well, prayer sure works. Jim Thompson had a minister on his radio program on the 13th last and he
prayed for rain and I had written a poem on the 12th that Jim read on the 14th and within a couple
days we started gettin' rain around the area. With hard work and faith in God we'll make it to
another year, and we're thankful for everything.
The 18th annual Dakota Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Medora, North Dakota was a blast! Did we
have fun! There were about 40 (I think, don't quote me) poets and singers and we each had about six
minutes each day. I recited four poems and two stories in the two days. Had a lot of fun and heard
some outstandin' poetry and singin'. Paula Harkins tore me up singin' Patsy Cline songs. She's good!
Speakin' of rain, have you ever calved a bunch of cows when all it did was rain? Cold rain? This poem
I wrote tryin' to get some sympathy. I thought my wife should feel kinda sorry for me, but there have
been some who convinced me that I got off too easy and she's the one who needs the sympathy.
Especially for havin' to put up with me.
